The complex diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis and the role of allied health professionals

In this episode of Arthritis At Home, we are sharing the #CRArthritis interview with Dr. Dax Rumsey on the complex diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis and the role allied health professionals can play in recognizing signs and understand patient reported symptoms. He also discusses the difference between inflammatory back pain and mechanical back pain, which is often worst with the morning and may be accompanied by skin manifestations and gastro symptoms. Further, Dr. Rumsey shares an eye-opening experience and encourages patients with undiagnosed back pain to self-advocate for their own medical needs.

Dr. Rumsey is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta and Director of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. His main clinical and research interest is in the area of juvenile spondyloarthritis and he is also the chair of the Early Identification and Diagnosis of Axial Spondyloarthritis (EIDA) program, an educational initiative aimed at educating non-rheumatologists about this disease, with the goal of earlier diagnosis, earlier treatment, and improved outcomes.
