Researchers from the University of British Columbia and the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada are looking for volunteers with rheumatoid arthritis who are willing to participate in a research study. Because Arthritis Consumer Experts believes that people with arthritis are important participants in scientific research, we are forwarding this study notice and invitation to participate to our members.
UBC researchers are conducting a study to determine the maximum amount of risk, in particular cardiovascular and gastrointestinal, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients are willing to take in order to realize some treatment benefit.
To facilitate this study, they are conducting a focus group interview on RA patients to determine: what benefits do RA patients consider important to them, and subsequently the levels of benefits that are considered significant. Focus group interviews will contain between 1-2 groups with between 4-8 people in each group. RA patients will identify to researchers the clearest and most preferred method of presenting risk information, when presented with several options.
Information obtained in these focus groups will be used by researchers to develop the design of the discrete choice experiment to determine risk-benefit tradeoffs for RA patients. Additionally, RA patients will identify to researchers the clearest and most preferred method of presenting risk information, when presented with several options. Information obtained in these focus groups will be used by researchers to develop the design of the discrete choice experiment to determine risk-benefit tradeoffs for RA patients.
The results of this study will provide an objective, quantitative evaluation of the maximum levels of risk-benefits tradeoffs that Rheumatoid Arthritis patients are willing to take. Those interested in volunteering or requiring further clarifications are to email the Research Coordinator, Belinda Chen, at chenb@interchange.ubc.ca, or call at 604-603-3167, to indicate interest.
After interest is indicated, volunteers are to check in at either the Providence center at St. Paul's hospital, or ARC (Arthritis Research Center), where they will be met with the research coordinator and provided with a consent form. Details regarding the consent form will then be carefully explained to the volunteers by the research coordinator, and then volunteers will be asked to sign the consent form if they consent to participating in the focus group.
